Victor A. Kovner
Kovner, a partner in the law firm of David Wright Tremaine, is one of the nation’s foremost First Amendment lawyers. He served as Corporation Counsel for the City of New York and Chair of the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct. Kovner has also served as Secretary and Chair of both the Committee on Judiciary and Committee on Communications Law of the Association of the Bar of New York City. For many years Kovner has been a member of the Board for the Fund for Modern Courts and been its chair for the past three.
In addition Kovner has been an officer of various civic groups including his service as Chair of the Board of Planned Parenthood of New York City and a member of the President’s Commission of White House Fellowships.
Kovner was a founding member and one-time Chairman of the Friends of the High School for Environmental Studies.
Sarah Kovner
Ms. Kovner is currently an advisor to non-profit organizations and candidates for public office, and a board member on a number of social groups, including the High School for Environmental Studies and Alliance for Justice. Ms. Kovner served as Special Assistant to the Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services in Washington DC from 1993 to 2001. In that role, she was the department representative for a selection of committees focused on women.
Prior to 1993, Ms Kovner founded and served on the boards for a number of organizations, including the New York Women’s Foundation, the National Women’s Political Caucus, Community Capital Bank, and was Chairperson of the First Women’s Bank.
The Nature Conservancy (Environmental Honoree)
TNC is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. The New York State Nature Conservancy has partnered with the Friends of the High School for Environmental Studies to create a mechanism for educators and students from environmentally–themed high schools nationwide to share practices for integrating environmental studies into the curricula, while offering access to the scientific research, land resources and conservation internships of the nation’s largest conservation organization.
The 3-year program called SEEC (Secondary Environmental Education Collaborative) will serve predominately urban students from diverse backgrounds and will provide internship opportunities for student around the country.
